Vedas are poetic texts which are written as hymns (mantras) singing gods. The
basic property of hymns consists that names of gods correspond with epithets or
glorifications which endow gods with various characteristics and qualities,
namely gods have identifying qualities and properties due to epithets.
Heavenly gods Adityas in Vedic mythology are solar gods who personify light and
consequently key characteristics and poetic epithets of Adityas are qualities of
light. Qualities of light are not classified in texts of Vedas i.e. there is no
ordered information on light, but by means of comparison of mythological gods
with zodiac signs and planets in astrology it is possible to classify qualities
of light, that is shown on the chart:
![]() |
The shown chart is similar to the chart on the previous
page. Namely 12 zodiac signs are designated by traditional symbols
within astrological circle. To each zodiac sign there corresponds the
letter of the Russian alphabet and a name of the god of Vedic mythology,
and also to each zodiac sign there correspond dominant planets
designated by red color and exalted planets designated by blue color. Near to names of gods there are epithets which specify qualities of light or otherwise to tell poetic images of light. I remind that text translation of this site is made by me but I am not sure in accuracy of translation from Russian language into English language. Epithets of light in Russian language look on parallel Russian page. |
SURYA personifies a bright and shrill sunlight which does not allow to
look at the sun as the planet mars dominates and the sun exalts in the zodiac
sign Aries. Mars symbolizes the sure and steadfast sight, and the sun is a
direct light source.
MITRA personifies illuminated and dawned sunlight which fills quiet and
universal radiation in space of the sky as the sun is a dominant planet in the
zodiac sign Leo. And also the zodiac sign Leo has an exalted planet venus which
is a morning or evening star and consequently venus is connected to radiation of
the sun when the sun has moderate intensity.
VISHNU personifies radiant and shining light which is not solar but
proceeds from stars as the zodiac sign Sagittarius has a dominant planet jupiter
which is the gas giant and it is perceived as a light source similar to stars.
It is necessary to tell that light of stars is present at the sky not only at
night but also in the afternoon when star light mixes with a sunlight. Therefore
VISHNU is not the night god but personifies variety of light, as well as all
heavenly gods Adityas of Vedic mythology.

Three gods SURYA, MITRA, VISHNU correspond with zodiac
signs of fire elements and form in structure of astrological circle the
triangle which characterizes qualities of light connected to different
intensity of the radiations, that is shown at the left chart. Light of SURYA is a bright and shrill radiation which blinds eyes. Light of MITRA is a soft radiation of average intensity. Light of VISHNU is a shining radiation of stars. |
PUSHAN personifies clear and transparent light which freely spreads in
space and can be appreciable when the sky has open cleanliness as the zodiac
sign Gemini has a dominant planet mercury which symbolizes unlimited
three-dimensional motion.
USHAS personifies sparkling light which arises when movement of light in
space refracts as the zodiac sign Libra has a dominant planet venus. Namely venus
is a morning star and consequently light seems sparkling in beams of a morning
dawn as the space near to horizon has curvature in which there is a refraction
of light.
ARYAMAN personifies vast and gaping light which dissipates in space as
the zodiac sign Aquarius has a dominant planet uranus which symbolizes
incomprehensible infinity of space where light dissipates and there is an
impression that the sky gapes.
Gods PUSHAN, USHAS, ARYAMAN correspond with zodiac signs of air elements and
form in astrological circle the triangle which characterizes qualities of light
connected with a different degree of dispersion and refraction of light in
space, that is shown on the following chart:
![]() |
Light of PUSHAN is the clearest and transparent that is
caused by open permeability of space. Light of USHAS too is clear and transparent, but refracts and consequently this light seems sparkling. Light of ARYAMAN dissipates in space and consequently this light seems gaping, as if the new boundless space dawns in each particle of light. These qualities of light, connected to dispersion and refraction in space, are not caused by presence of water in the sky, namely not caused by humidity of air but arise in the pure and clear sky as these gods correspond with zodiac signs of air elements. |
SAVITR personifies pale and dim light which can be seen in a matte
luminescence of the moon as the moon exalts in the zodiac sign Taurus.
And also the zodiac sign Taurus has a dominant planet venus which has a pale
luminescence if is an evening star and is observed in beams of a sunset.
Evening venus seems pale and corresponds with the zodiac sign Taurus as
against morning venus which seems sparkling and corresponds with the zodiac sign
Libra.
ANSA personifies not clear and vague light which can be seen in the
evening sky as the zodiac sign Virgo has an exalted planet mercury which has
partial visibility if is observed in the evening sky.
Morning mercury corresponds with the zodiac sign Gemini and seems
transparent, but evening mercury corresponds with the zodiac sign Virgo and
seems not clear, or it is possible to tell that mercury seems in part seen and
in part invisible in not clear evening light.
BHAGA personifies brilliant and crystal light which seems displayed in a
crystal or projected in numerous mirrors as the zodiac sign Capricorn has a
dominant planet saturn which symbolizes a crystal structure of the world.
Gods SAVITR, ANSA, BHAGA correspond with zodiac signs of earth elements and form
in astrological circle the triangle which characterizes qualities of light
connected with displaying, that is shown on the following chart:
![]() |
Light of SAVITR is an equal and pale luminescence
caused by one projection. Light of ANSA is a not clear luminescence caused by a dual projection. Light of BHAGA is a crystal luminescence caused by a multiple-valued projection or otherwise to tell repeated displays. The listed qualities of a projected light can be seen in the sky at attentive observation, though a projected light is mixed with a sunlight in the day sky and consequently difficultly distinguishes, but in the night sky the listed qualities of a projected light are more obvious. As a result of displaying light there can be various optical effects and phenomena. |
VARUNA personifies indistinct and vague light which is possible to see
when it seems that light of the moon merges with a surface of water which as if
is spilled in the sky as the moon is a dominant planet in the zodiac sign Crab
and VARUNA is the keeper of heavenly waters.
The moon seems damp and glossy in light of VARUNA that differs from matte and
dim moonlight of SAVITR as the zodiac sign Crab concerns to elements of water.
VIVASVAT personifies foggy and gloomy light which seems veiled as in the
zodiac sign Scorpio has a dominant planet pluto which symbolizes a twilight. It
is possible to tell that
VIVASVAT personifies a gloomy and cloudy sky which absorbs light of the sun.
And also in the zodiac sign Scorpio has an exalted planet uranus that allows to
correlate this god to electric light in lightning as the planet uranus
symbolizes a heavenly electricity.
The planet uranus dominates or exalt in four zodiac signs and consequently
four gods
VIVASVAT, SURYA, ARYAMAN, BHAGA have qualities of light which can be seen in
flashes of lightning, and also in view of a polar lights (northern lights), or
in view of other electric and electromagnetic effects in the sky. Four zodiac
signs concern to different elements: Scorpio - elements of water, Aries -
elements of fire, Capricorn - elements of earth, Aquarius - elements of air that
means different displays of a heavenly electricity.
Most strongly the planet uranus is shown in zodiac signs Aquarius and Capricorn
and consequently gaping light of ARYAMAN and crystal light of BHAGA seems
electrified.
It is necessary to mean that gods of Vedic mythology in the category Rudras are
direct personifications of lightning and thunders but heavenly gods Adityas are
light of lightning.
DHATR personifies indiscernible and disappearing light which is possible
to see when the sky is filled with a moisture and is similar to glass as the
zodiac sign Pisces has a dominant planet neptune which symbolizes illusions, and
including symbolizes illusions which result from movement of light through glass
or water. As the god Neptune is a sea tsar in the Roman mythology.
And also light of DHATR can be seen when in the sky there is a rainbow as if the
sky is a glass prism through which light goes.
The rainbow or similar optical effects also can arise in light of VISHNU or ARYAMAN
as the planet neptune too matters in the appropriate zodiac signs Sagittarius
and Aquarius.
Gods VARUNA,
VIVASVAT, DHATR correspond with zodiac signs of water elements and form in
astrological circle the triangle which characterizes qualities of light
connected with absorption and distortion, that is shown on the following chart:
![]() |
Light of VARUNA is caused by small quantity of water in
air that creates impression of a vagueness of the seen phenomena. Light of VIVASVAT is caused by a veil of water which is present at air and creates a haze. Light of DHATR is caused by a significant amount of water at air in which light seems disappearing, or it is possible to tell that light is dissolved in water. It is necessary to take into account that light of this or that god is not the only in the sky, namely common light of the sky develops of qualities of light of all gods, but sometimes light of this or that god is the most appreciable. |
Total 12 heavenly gods Adityas correspond with 12 zodiac signs and planets which form structure of astrological circle and characterize qualities of light. It is possible to tell that 12 heavenly gods form space of a universe and fill in space light which has qualities of zodiac signs and planets, and also has qualities of four world elements which are shown on the chart:
![]() |
The horizontal axis of world elements means properties
of environment in which light spreads, and the vertical axis means
properties of light sources. Environment can be dry that causes refraction or dispersion of light and corresponds with zodiac signs of air elements. Or environment can be damp that causes absorption and various distortions of light, and corresponds with zodiac signs of water elements. Light sources can be original that creates hot radiation and corresponds with zodiac signs of fire elements. Or light sources can be false that creates cold displaying and various projections of light, and corresponds with zodiac signs of earth elements. |
The listed qualities of light and gradation of qualities according to four world
elements can be considered from the view point of physical parameters of light
and from the view point of various light phenomena which are caused by wave and
corpuscular properties of light. And accordingly it is possible to compare
physical parameters of light to physical parameters of sounds in human speech
according to comparison of gods in Vedic mythology with letters of the alphabet.
At the end of this page it is necessary to tell that fire too is a light source,
but fire in Vedic mythology is not considered as the heavenly phenomenon and
consequently does not correspond with heavenly gods Adityas. In Vedic mythology
there is the god AGNI who is personification of fire, and also some atmospheric
gods in the category Rudras personify fire, but heavenly gods too have fiery
qualities (epithets), and heavenly gods are interconnected with AGNI and gods in
the category Rudras if correspond with zodiac signs where the planet mars
dominates or exalts as the planet mars symbolizes fire. For example, mars
dominates in the zodiac sign Aries where the god SURYA personifies a bright
sunlight which can be scorching and similar to a flame of fire.
The following page describes atmospheric gods Rudras of Vedic mythology in comparison with a phonetic structure of the modern Russian alphabet and language.
